Meme a Little Meme for Me

Okay. I got another one of these meme things from my lovely wife. This one has to do with music.

The last CD I bought was: Two actually, because they had a twofer at Borders. They were "Django Reinhardt & Stephane Grappelly with The Quintet of the Hot Club of France" and "Highway 61 Revisited.

Song playing right now: It's first thing in the morning, so I've only got the music of the spheres and the voices in my head. If I could put on any song right now, it would be "Tombstone Blues" specifically for the line "He looked up at the sun/And said 'it's not yellow, it's chicken.'"

Five songs I listen to a lot or that mean a lot to me:
"I Am the Walrus" (I think it's the most extraordinary song anybody ever done writ.)
"The Cool, Cool River" by Paul Simon. (It's the one song that always makes me cry.)
"Free" from "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum" by Stephen Sondheim. (This sums up how I'm feeling about my working life these days.)
"Anyone Can Whistle" by Stephen Sondheim from the musical of the same name. (This is the other song that always makes me cry.)
"The Old Dope Peddler" by Tom Lehrer. (One of the great comic songs of all time.)

Five People to Whom I'm Passing the Baton: Since the folks who tend to read my blog don't blog themselves, I'm going to open up my page to their lists. Come on. Robert, Mark, Bernie. And anybody else who happens to wander by and wishes to either leave their musings here or to post them elsewhere.

Ah, sweet music... I haven't bought any CDs since Xmas- I listen to lots of radio as I hope to be surprised. One of the Xmas ones was Lucinda Williams' "Car Wheels on a Gravel Road," which I love. It is too hard to say what my five all-time songs are, so I will go with five songs I want to hear right now:

"Little Green Bag" by Tom Jones and Barenaked Ladies.

"Big Iron" by Marty Robbins

"If I Needed Someone" by Los Beatles

"It's Been a Pretty Good Day, So Far" by Loudon Wainwright III

"Love at First Light" by Joe Jackson

I've only heard that last song one time... we saw Joe live this past Friday night and I was really impressed- he's an excellent piano player, a brave singer and he has really pretty skin.

Right now, no music is playing, as it is really early on a Sunday morning. Maybe I'll put on "Guitar Man" by Cake when the rest of the family wakes up.

Well memed, Ben. It's nice to hear Joe Jackson's dermal charms praised so. I heard he had chapped lips when he played Lupo's in Providence back in the '80s, but that was probably just show business back stabbing.

The last CD I bought was:
I've been in eclectic land lately. The last CDs I bought were Impressions by John Coltrane and Fair and Square from John Prine. I like Coltrane, his passion and the freedom of the group blows away any cobwebs I may have... this one has Eric Dolphy on a few cuts. I'd like to take this opportunity to thank Mark for introducing me to the music of John Prine... Bruised Orange, back in the day. Prine's new one is thoughtful, subtle, funny, insightful... all the great qualities he brings to the craft. Now if we can only get him to cover "Tall Baby."

Song playing right now:
I listen to a lot of music by myself in my car. I just heard Fudd on the Hill by Little Roger and the Goosebumps from an old radio show I did with my friend Z.

Five songs Iisten to a lot:
I really like Guero by Beck... the song and the album. I recently bought The Nighfly by Donald Fagan and just love the whole thing. I was hooked on Smile by Brian Wilson. In My Life by the Be-Uhles. I had Shattered by the Stones stuck in my head yesterday.
